From Michigan Place Names
Jackson County: a Grand Trunk Railroad depot was built here on Hiram Sutton's farm and the place was first called Sutton's Crossing. The post office of West Portage was moved here from Nelson Hoyt's home and, at the suggestion of Charles H. Smith, was renamed after Munich, Germany. Mr. Hoyt became the first postmaster of Munith on April 28, 1880. When Mr. Sutton platted the village he also recorded it as Munith [Mich Hist 5:46 1921; GSM 1883; PO Archives]
