Soon after the H.M. Loud & Sons Lumber Company, of Oscoda and Au Sable, acquired the lumbering interests of the Potts Lumber Company in 1885, they also began to carry mail and passengers on their narrow gauge railroad. After the depot was moved from McKinley to Comins, a post office was opened, with Joseph W. Salt becoming its first postmaster on Nov. 15, 1900.
