Note: The Lake St. address is assumed given the description in the newspaper articles and the 1954 aerial photo.
This grand old hotel was built in 1890's by Mr. and Mrs. Jake White. This is in the days when guests arrived by train and went about town in horse and buggy. By WW1, the hotel was acquired by Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Orcutt and their daughter and son in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Northway. This is when it became known as the Northway Hotel, previously the White Hotel.
When the Orcutt's passed away Mr. and Mrs. Lester Deely took over and operated the hotel until it was sold at public auction in 1958. Eventually, a Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Gamble took it over and renamed it the Northway Inn. They refurnished and redecorated it at that time. Apparently, that was not enough to keep the old place going much longer as it was liquidated and closed by 1966. The Gambles sold off the furniture and fixtures prior to the building being razed.
Nothing remains today of the old hotel, a building encompassing 5 addresses now occupies the site. I am not sure what it houses as no businesses are listed on Google Maps. I will check it out and get some photos the next time I am in that area.
