There was a Blue Boat bar on 8 mile in Detroit in the 1930's. Was this place named after it in the 1940's? I don't know. The Blue Boat was going in the 40's and lasted until 1982. My impression is it was more on the rustic side. Candles opened in the same location after that. They went along pretty well until the place was eventually converted to a Tom's Oyster Bar.
That didn't last as long as it was Bayview Barge by 1999. That also closed a few years later. Recently, the place was purchased in October 2022. It appears it has undergone some renovations over the years and honestly the building looks sound. The parking lot has a small drainage issue which could be resolved so we will see what opens up. It's got a great setting right on the water but there is lots of competition along that stretch.
I was a bit unsure if the building pictured was in fact the place. There is no official address associated with it as of 2022 as it has been closed for some time. Google Maps will take you to the end of this street on the water. The reason I believe it is correct is MapQuest, whose listings are sometimes out of date (which is GOOD for me), points that address to Bayview Barge and the location is the parking lot for this building.
The addresses on either side would point to it being 32760 also. I will go with it for now. I would assume where the chimney stands is the back room pictured in the Candles feature article. You can sort of make out a fireplace on the side wall. The back of the place would be mostly windows on the water side.
