1/17/2012 - ron elliott
The mouse that one person was talking about was a man named Wes Beckett and he was a Canadian from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. He ran a modified with a 289cid ford engine.

The track was called Superior Speedway at one point in the mid 1980's. I have the trophy from there to prove it. Canadian Hubie BRAZEAU set a new super late model track record during the fair and still has the plaque and trophy from Superior Speedway in Escanaba.

I spent the majority of my teen-age years at the UP State Fairgrounds when it was dirt. There was an epic rivalry between the Iverson and Richer camps in the modifides. The racing was incredible. My Mothers cousin, Dick Peterson was Track Champion for years in the Stock Division. Couple times of year the odified guys from around Milwaukee would show up and blow the doors off all the locals. They had the money our guys didn't. The guy I remember the most went by the nickname the Mouse. He was bad fast. I had some of the best times at this track.

I would like the Upper Peninsula International Raceway in Escanaba to your website. The address is 2401 12th Ave No, Escanaba, MI. 49829. We have a 1/5 mile dirt track and will have 5 races in 2011. We are a group of volunteers working with the Delta County Chamber of Commerce raising funds for a multi-surface, multi-season motor sports facility. We do not have our own website yet but are on Facebook and www. upirracing. blogspot. com.

4-17-2010 They had a crew of 25 guys. they are going to start up the track again
in June with about three races on dirt or clay. Now that the county owns the Fairgrounds, it will make working with them alot easier. They are talking for the 2011 season to have it paved. That is it for know.
11/9/2009 - Robert
it was paved in late 70s and dick trickle holds the track record and close in mid 80s

Used to go to the races at the Escanaba Fair Grounds all the time in the 70's. Good dirt track racing. They ruined it when they paved it. Never went after that.

According to NA-Motorspots Thunder Valley near Marquette was called superior Speedway at one time. When I went to thunder Valley a few years ago, we called a speedway in Escanaba to see whenthey were running. I think we got through. What speedway might that have been?
10/5/2006 - Don Bougie
Bayland Speedway is not open it is closed as of 2002. thanks again Don
10/4/2006 - Don Bougie
It was never called Superior Speedway. The last name of the track at the U.P. State Fair Grounds was Bayland Speedway. But at the height of racing in Escanaba was between 1966 to 1974 on dirt.
